Ms. McCarthy has been a school counselor at Kino Junior High since 2014.  Prior to joining Kino, she worked as a school counselor in several other Mesa elementary and junior high schools; including Summit Academy K-8, Rhodes Junior High, Carson Junior High, Franklin Junior High, and Franklin Elementary at Brimhall.  Before working as a school counselor, Ms. McCarthy was a play therapist for a K-6 school in Glendale, Arizona and a community mental health counselor for several agencies in the valley.

Ms. McCarthy attended Arizona State University where she earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Counseling.  While attending ASU, Ms. McCarthy worked for the university as a teaching assistant for several professors and on Project INTERSECT. This research project investigates how things such as gender, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and peer relationships, impact academic performance in childhood and adolescence.

Ms. McCarthy was born in San Jose, California, but moved to Arizona before starting her education.  Ms. McCarthy has lived in Mesa for most of her life and attended schools within the Mesa Public Schools District (Hermosa Vista Elementary, Stapley Junior High, and Mountain View High School).  When she is not working with students, Ms. McCarthy enjoys spending time with her son, husband, friends, and family; attending concerts; and playing with her dog, Boba Fetch (extra points to those who understand the Star Wars play-on-words!).

Ms. McCarthy is the school counselor for students whose last names begin with E-M.  As a school counselor, Ms. McCarthy meets with individual students for academic advising and to provide responsive services.  Responsive services include: additional support provided to individuals through personal counseling, support groups, parent conferencing, emergency response services, and referrals to outside agencies.  She also presents various classroom lessons on career guidance, planning for the future, getting along with others, and student success.  Ms. McCarthy works with the Counseling Department to develop school-wide programs and activities, such as Kino Kickoff for incoming 7th graders, prevention assemblies, and the Student Ambassador program which assists students who are new to Kino.  Ms. McCarthy is Kino's Yearbook sponsor.
