- Reading, mathematics, and communication grades are based on tests and teacher observation.
- Addition and subtraction facts are graded using a 4 minute timing of 60 problems with 80% or better as passing.
- Effort grades are based on teacher observation.
READING: Our emphasis in reading is on phonics, fluency, and comprehension. We also have intervention groups to work with students in small groups on specific skills.
MATH: We will cover timed addition and subtraction facts, numbers, patterns, estimating, graphing, problem solving, calculators, place value, odd and even, logical reasoning, skip counting, 1,2, and 3 digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, money, time, geometry, fractions, and measurement (standard and metric).
SPELLING: Each week we will have a focus skill and 15 words that come from the weekly theme.
WRITING: We use Writer's Workshop to teach the following genres: personal narrative, imaginative story, communication, report writing, and poetry. The Six Traits of Writing (ideas, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency and conventions) are the skills used within each genre.
SCIENCE TOPICS: Our science themes include: Breath, Blood & Guts, Weather Watchers, Solid, Liquid & Gas, and Life Cycles.
SOCIAL STUDIES: The 2nd grade focus is on American history, world history, government, economics, and geography.
