Sixth Grade Curriculum

Reading
Our focus will be on increasing your child's higher level thinking skills and reading strategies through various forms of literature.  Students will be involved in daily silent reading, participating in literature studies, responding through a reading response log, and learning reading skills and vocabulary within the context of what they are reading.

 Written Language
Students will have daily opportunities for writing including stories, projects, letters, poetry, class books, and many other methods of incorporating the Writing Destinations methodology throughout the curriculum.  Spelling and mechanics will be stressed in all writing assignments.  Editing by both peers and teacher will assist in identifying areas in need of revision for individual students.

Math
Our Scott Foresman math series is an exciting tool to utilize for departmentalizing.  There is guided instruction to assist in daily practice, manipulatives for each student, and a reading and writing connection to problem solving.  We also incorporate a daily spiral review of skills, along with pre- and postassessments for each chapter to assist in our across-the-grade level grouping.

Science
Ms. Reiter will instruct this year students in experiencing learning in the Earth, Life, and Physical Science areas, as well as, becoming familiar with scientific processes.  The main lessons to be covered will be Oceanography and Extreme Weather, Powering Our Future, and Cells to Systems.

Social Studies
Mrs. Jones will use our Harcourt Social Studies curriculum to help students become familiar with other cultures both past and present.  Topics covered will include geography, ancient civilizations, world history, and people and places around the world.
