RESPONSIBLE CHILDREN

Parents want their children to be “responsible.” But what does this really mean? A responsible person is respectful, honest, courageous and in control. Here are some ways to encourage these traits in your child:

Respectfulness: Children need to be concerned about themselves and others. Help your child consider feelings. For example, "How could that decision make your friend feel?" "How would it make you feel about yourself?"

Honesty:
Although being truthful is sometimes hard, it feels worse to deceive. Talk with your child about how honesty leads to trust. Set a good example by admitting mistakes. Make it a family habit to apologize, learn from things, and move on.

Courage:
Standing up for beliefs can be scary. Prepare your child by role-playing tough situations. Explain that it's normal to be intimidated. Encourage her to make good decisions despite her fear. That's a real sign of bravery.

Self-control:
Life is full of temptations. Children benefit when they are patient and calm. If your child is angry about something, for example, help her weigh the pros and cons of possible reactions. --The Parent Institute.
