Register any school day for free full- and half-day kindergarten programs. New residents are invited to enroll this semester. Registration is also underway for the 2008-09 school year Stop by the elementary campus in your neighborhood, or choose open-enrollment options.
• A free full-day kindergarten program will be available at each elementary school, including some Montessori programs and all the district's original Franklin back-to-basics schools.
• Parents may also choose a half-day kindergarten class for the child. This option will be available at select sites, but the locations have not yet been determined.
To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by Aug. 31. Open enrollment applications will be accepted.
Children who turn 5 between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 may be enrolled in a kindergarten program if parents believe it is in the child's best interest. The younger children are grouped in smaller classes, and are taught by a teacher and an instructional assistant. These classes are half day and are not available at all elementary schools.
To enroll for kindergarten, parents should bring the following information:
• a certified copy of their youngster's birth certificate
• a current immunization record
• a document to verify their address -- a current utility bill, a rent receipt, or a rental or purchase agreement.
The first day of school for 2008-09 will be Aug. 11.
The curriculum covers Arizona Academic Content Standards for Kindergarten and focuses on reading, writing, math, science, the arts, physical education, and social and emotional development.
