Janet Ferguson (Spicer)
Gifted and Talented Mendoza, Bush and Oconnor Elementary
My teaching career began in 1994 with Mesa Public Schools. I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado and began teaching here in Mesa at Longfellow Elementary. I have taught 6th grade at Longfellow, MacArthur, and Bush Elementary. This is my 12th year teaching the Gifted and Talented program for Mendoza and Bush Elementary and this year we have added O'Connor elementary. Professionally I also teach the Gifted Foundations courses for Mesa Public Schools and am a presenter at the Arizona Association for Gifted Children conferences. I am passionate about the gifted mind and helping these young children in their education.
On a personal note, I grew up in Colorado and moved to Arizona to start my teaching career. I have two daughters, one attends University of Arizona and my other daughter is graduating from Mesa High this spring. I enjoy watching football and cheering on the Denver Broncos. I also enjoy camping, hiking, and traveling.
My teaching philosophy centers around this quote: "Ask not how smart is the child but how is the child smart" -Gardner
