Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I am excited to get to know each of you. I was born and raised in central Ohio and am a graduate of The Ohio State University. This will be my sixth year teaching Self-Contained Special Education and my second at Mendoza. I spent the prior four years teaching MIID at Shepherd Junior High. Prior to teaching school, I worked for the State of Arizona in the Department of Developmental Disabilities. At DDD I held several different positions including: working with teens and adults with developmental disabilities in group homes, as a QMRP case manager, in staff development & training, and in special needs foster care licensing.
This year we will be very busy learning many new and interesting things. While our focus will be on student IEP goals we will also focus on improving math, phonics, reading and writing skills. In addition to core content we will learn about reading environmental print, the world around us, what it means to be a good citizen, using money, community safety, making good lifestyle choices and improving our computer skills.
A big goal for all students in the MIID classroom is to increase their level of independence and personal responsibility. As such, homework for the entire week will be sent home on Monday and is due first thing Friday morning. These assignments help reinforce what is taught in class and increases the students’ ability to remember the new information. Homework is the responsibility of the student to complete and remember to turn-in by its due date.
Home notes/ Newsletters and completed work will be sent home on Friday’s in the home-school folders. If you prefer more frequent contact or have any questions or concerns please let me know
