Mrs. Maryann Stegall
I am an Arizona native growing up in Scottsdale. I graduated from Coronado, where I played volleyball, softball, and track. This is where I learned to sign as we had six students who were Deaf attend Coronado. We became fast friends and are still friends today. I currently play on a softball team where the players are Deaf. We travel each year to play in the NSAD (National Softball Association for the Deaf) softball tournament.
I earned my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1984 and my Master's degree in 1989. Both from Arizona State University. I started teaching in 1984 at Whittier Elementary. In 1997 I moved to Porter Elementary. In 2000 I started at Mesa High teaching American Sign Language.

Dual Enrollment Fall Semester SLG101 4 Credits - American Sign Language I: Introduction of principles, methods, and techniques for communicating with deaf people who sign. Development of expressive and receptive sign skills, manual alphabet, numbers, and sign vocabulary. Overview of syntax, grammar, and culture related to American Sign Language (A.S.L.). Prerequisites: None.
Dual Enrollment Spring Semester SLG102 4 Credits 4 - American Sign Language II: Continued development of knowledge and language skills for communicating with deaf people who sign. Includes numbers, fingerspelling, and culture. Emphasis on enhancement of receptive sign skills and continued development of expressive sign skills. Application of rudimentary, syntactical, and grammatical structure stressed with continued development of sign vocabulary. Prerequisites: SLG101, with a grade of “C” or better, or permission of department or division.
WL 19 American Sign Language II
2 Sem. — 1 WL Credit
Dual Enrollment Fall Semester SLG201 4 Credits 4 - American Sign Language III: Linguistics of American Sign Language (A.S.L.) including non-manual behaviors and signing English idioms with conceptual accuracy. Emphasis on practical application of A.S.L. skills, expanded vocabulary, and cross-cultural communication. Prerequisites: SLG102 with a grade of “C” or better, or permission of Department or Division. Suggested but not required: (ENG101 or ENG107) and, (CRE101 or CRE111 or exemption by score on the reading placement test (ASSET)).
Dual Enrollment Spring Semester SLG202 4 Credits 4 American Sign Language IV - Advanced American Sign Language skills including continued vocabulary. Emphasis on conversational techniques in a cross-cultural framework. Continued work on conceptual accurate signing of English idioms and words with multiple meanings. Prerequisites: SLG201 with “C” or better, or permission of Department or Division. ENG101, SLG200, and (CRE101, or CRE111, or exemption by score on the reading placement test) suggested but not required.
WL 28 American Sign Language III
Difficulty: Avg-High 2 Sem. — 1 WL Credit Prerequisites: Level II Proficient
This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate better comprehension and expression in American Sign. Advanced study of vocabulary, idioms, classifiers, use of space, and grammatical features of American Sign will be included. Students will engage in conversations with native signers, as well as participate in an in-depth study of the Deaf culture. NOTE: This is a weighted course.
