What is Sundown?

Sundown offers students a unique way to earn credits to graduate by working at their own pace, using a combination of computer and research work. Because students must be able to read and comprehend at the level of the coursework being offered, a reading comprehension test is administered to students to ensure their success. Students who have “met” or “exceeded” the high school AIMS reading exam are not tested. Students will be taught the use of the computer system, will be monitored daily, and will be counseled on successful strategies to complete coursework.

How can I make up for lost credit?

The Sundown Program offers two ways for high school students to earn credits toward graduation, credit recovery and regular academic class enrollment. Credit recovery students have taken a course previously, but did not earn credit. Those students must only meet the academic requirements of the course to earn credit. Credit recovery students have no seat time requirement. Students enrolled in an academic class for the first time must successfully complete the entire computer-generated course requirements, as well as meet seat time requirement.

Sundown is an excellent way to earn credits in a less traditional learning environment. Students who struggle with multiple academic classes during the regular school day can take one course at a time until credit is earned, and then enroll in another class.

Is there a fee?

The program is free to students 21 years of age and younger. However, students who are enrolled in more than six classes are charged $150. This includes any combination of MPS coursework, or other educational institutions, i.e. EVIT and three classes in a public school, six classes in a non Mesa Public School, etc. Students may also enroll in a class at no cost if they qualify for assistance through MPS OnTrack Grant.

Where are classes held?

Mesa High School’s computer lab, room 136. 1630 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, AZ 85204.

How do I register?

Sundown is an open entry/exit program. Students may enroll at any time, but must register Monday through Friday with Dr. Lynch in Counseling or call 480-472-5918.

The Mesa Distance Learning Program (MDLP) is an Internet instructional program sponsored by Mesa Public Schools and used by other Arizona school districts. Courses are available for kindergarten through high school, and a student may even earn a high school diploma upon successful completion. Arizona students, as well as out-of-state students, are eligible for the program.

Distance Learning is a state-of-the-art concept in education. The traditional classroom is replaced by online instructors who stay in regular contact with students to promote success. The curriculum is interactive and motivating for students. MDLP courses are written by certified teachers and are aligned to state and national standards.

Please check the MDLP website at www.mdlp.org for course information and fees or contact Mesa Distance Learning, 549 N. Stapley Drive, Bldg. 4, Mesa, AZ 85203-7197.

Correspondence Courses

High School Correspondence Courses: The MPS Correspondence program is one of the most successful in the state. Nearly 1,000 Mesa students sign up for courses each school year. This program is unique because a student is able to meet with an instructor on campus regularly. There is an on-campus counselor to handle any questions and to record grades. It is a convenient, cost-effective way to pick up additional courses quickly.
Courses are available in history, government, economics, English, and even electives. Signing up is as simple as a visit to the high school counseling office. The course packets and textbooks are available at each high school for immediate course start up. The fee per course is $150.00. Contact the counseling office at any high school in Mesa for more information.
