Goals / Benefits
In an ongoing collaboration with Mesa Community College, Main; Mesa Community College at the Red Mountain Campus; Chandler-Community College; Arizona State University, Tempe; and Arizona State University, Polytech, the goals and the benefits of participating in the Mesa Grow Your Own Teachers (MGYO) include ...
  1. Empowering the “teacher candidates” to become academically successful and help them pursue a post secondary education.
  2. Helping the “teacher candidate” complete his / her teacher preparation.
  3. Providing limited financial assistance:
    1. Partial text book reimbursement (half the cost of required education and specialization text).
    2. English as a Second Language (ESL) provisional endorsement Textbooks provided by Mesa School
      District’s English Language Learner Acquisition Department (ELLAD).
    3. Eligibility for tuition reimbursement (cap of 12 semester hours per school year) is overseen by Mesa Schools Human Resources Director of Classified Employees.
    4. Possible employment as an instructional aide or serve as a volunteer at a Mesa school or a District approved volunteer program.
    5. Assistance in identifying and acquiring scholarships and grants.
  4. Assisting the “teacher candidates” with making preparations for possible educator status in the Mesa Public School District.

Guidelines / Requirements

The “teacher candidate” . . .

  1. Attends the five high school MGYO Professional Development Sessions.
  2. Actively participates in MGYO for four consecutive school years (participation is limited to four consecutive school years) leading to teacher certification.
  3. Must be attending the college or the university full time (12 credit hours) per semester leading to teacher certification. And will remain academically sound while participating in MGYO (passing each class with a letter grade of “C” and at least maintaining a “C” grade point average).
  4. Should meet with their assigned academic advisor(s) at least once each semester during their college/university education.
  5. Is to be employed as an instructional aide or serve as a volunteer at a Mesa District school or a District - approved program which consists of a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer service per school year.
    Please note! The teacher candidate’s internship/field experience counts as meeting this requirement once being admitted to the block program. Call Mesa Human Resources for Employment and Volunteer Opportunities (Ms. Jill Bonewell, 480-472-0423).
  6. Permits Mesa Community College, Main; Mesa Community College at Red Mountain, Chandler-Gilbert Community College; Arizona State University, Tempe; Arizona State University, Polytech; and Northern Arizona University to share academic information related to the candidate’s educational status.
  7. While enrolled at the college/university attends and participates in all MGYO Professional Development Sessions (unless excused otherwise). This includes active participation in the college or university sponsored sessions (minimum of 2 hours per school year).
  8. Complies with the state and federal laws and all District policies and regulations applicable to District employees or volunteers.
  9. Recognizes that participation in MGYO does not guarantee that the District will employ the candidate as a teacher in the future. And, the District is not obligated to help the candidate find employment elsewhere. MGYO is not a placement service.
