Service Learning » 2.Then and Now

	Then… Mesa Service Learning was initiated in 1993 when a small network of teachers gathered to share ideas. In 1995 the first Advisory Board convened, and the program has grown significantly every year. A few small grants helped seed “Mesa Service Learning Project.”

	Now… Seventeen years later we are a district-funded department of Mesa Unified Schools, part of the Curriculum and Instruction team. The Service Learning Department has a full time director who manages the K-12 program for this district of 67,000 students. Leading the network are Service Learning Coaches at secondary schools and an Advisory Board of teachers, students and leaders from various communtity organizations.
