Service learning is a teaching strategy, not a program. This section contains segments of the training materials that are used in Mesa Public Schools to help teachers from Pre-Kindergarten through high school as they incorporate service learning into their classes, clubs, teams, and other school groups. In February of 2011 the pdf of the latest training manual, Service for a Life Time: A Training Manual for Educators K16, was added as a tab and may be downloaded in its entirety. College ideas are included in the latest manual.
The basic components are: What is Service Learning. Why? (What are the Benefits?), and How to Do Service (The “PAR” Model), where, and when (including National Service Days).
Ideas for projects may be found throughout this website, but the prototypes are the best way to get the big picture of how to put together a service learning project that combines academic and service learning standards, and the best practices of service learning. The State and National Standards follow on the next two tabs.
Mesa Service Learning offers training to educators K12 on service learning. For a current schedule of professional development workshops, go to Resources/Mesa/Training Opportunities on this site.
