Band in Mesa Public Schools

The MPS band program provides students in grades 5-12 with the opportunity to receive instruction on woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. Highly qualified band teachers provide instruction during the school day as part of the overall music curriculum.

The level 1 and level 2 band courses (grades 5-6) introduce the essential elements of playing a wind or percussion instruments. The students who completes these courses will be able to demonstrate understanding of:

  • Rhythm/Meter
  • Pitch, Scales, Rudiments
  • Music Fundamentals
  • Dynamics
by playing, listening, reading/writing and creating music appropriate to the instrument and performance level of the student.

The level 3, 4 and 5 band courses (grades 7-9) continue to expand on the essential elements of playing a wind or percussion instrument. The student who completes these courses will be able to demonstrate an increased understanding of:

  • Rhythm/Meter
  • Pitch, Scales, Rudiments
  • Music Fundamentals
  • Dynamics
by playing, listening, reading/writing and creating music appropriate to the instrument and performance level of the student.

The level 6, 7 and 8 band courses (grades 10-12) continue to expand on the essential elements of playing a wind or percussion instrument presented in the elementary and junior high level band courses. The student who completes these courses will also include proficiency in the elements of:

  • Rhythm/Meter
  • Pitch, Scales, Rudiments
  • Music Fundamentals
  • Dynamics
  • Articulation
  • Ensemble Skills and Intonation
  • Improvisation and Composition
by playing, listening, reading/writing and creating music appropriate to the instrument and performance level of the student.
