Mesa Academy wins city, state academic titles
Mesa Academy champions, and city and state runners-up from Taylor Junior High, qualified to compete in the National Academic League's Championship Tournament of Academic Excellence this spring.
The Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies captured 2012 city and state championships in National Academic League competition.
"NAL is the super sport for junior high academic athletes," said Mary Evans, Mesa's NAL commissioner. "Teams combine knowledge and strategy with a competitive spirit, one-on-one speed, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills."
NAL questions span 22 subjects in math, language, science, social studies and current events categories. Topics reflect local curriculum and national standards.
Mesa Academy and Taylor Junior High, city and state runner-up, will face kids throughout the country via video conference. The National Championship Tournament of Academic Excellence is scheduled March 5-April 27. Arizona State University will coordinate Mesa's video conferences.
"Congratulations to these winning teams, and to coaches Joe Reilly of the Mesa Academy and Kay Warfield of Taylor," Evans said. "Thanks also go to judges Michael Spencer and Molly Driskell."
