Grants will be awarded for Innovation Proposals to increase college completion among Mesa’s low-income youth, ages 16-26. Guidelines and applications are available online. Proposals are due by June 22. Grants of up to $7,500 will be announced by June 30.
The process is open to individuals and nonprofit organizations in Arizona, including educational institutions, faculty, 501(c) 3 organizations, government institutions, charter schools and community groups.
The call for Innovation Proposals is offered by Mesa Counts on College, a partnership of the city of Mesa, Mesa Community College and Mesa Public Schools. This initiative is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Not enough young people in Mesa are completing certificate or college-degree programs.
Our high schools in Mesa have an outstanding graduation rate and have been recognized nationally. But only 54 percent of our graduates take the next step to begin a certificate or college program. Then, only 23 percent of our graduates finish — and for our low-income youth, those numbers are even lower.
