MPS to host sexual-awareness parent meetings

Parents of ninth-graders are invited to attend at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Mesa High Auditorium Wing No. 201, 1630 E. Southern Ave., Mesa. Parents of seventh-graders are invited to attend at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 in the Kino Junior High Auditorium, 848 N. Horne, Mesa.

Mesa Public Schools offers four lessons for ninth-graders and four lessons for seventh-graders on the physiological and psychological aspects of human sexuality. The program encourages sexual abstinence before marriage and emphasizes possible consequences of teenage sexual activity, including pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The ninth-grade curriculum also includes the subject of dating-violence prevention.

MPS wants parents to be completely aware of the program. Parents throughout the district are invited to an informational meeting pertaining to their child's grade level to hear an overview of the lessons that will be presented and to meet the teachers — Cindy Maguire, Kay Russell and Larry Clouse. They will be available to answer parents' questions about their child's classroom instruction on this important topic.
