MPS lands $50,000 library grant from Target

The grant, titled 21st Century Libraries for 21st Century Students, is funding $50,000 worth of ebooks to boost English language arts skills districtwide.

Ebooks photo"With reduced library budgets, we can't support curriculum needs as much as we'd like to," said Lisa Bowen, Mesa Public Schools library services specialist.

"Our new Common Core State Sandards in English language arts require students to read more informational text. So our focus, this year, is on nonfiction.

"Ebooks are a source of reading materials for students and instructional materials for teachers. The $50,000 worth of ebooks provides a wealth of extra resources for our kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms districtwide," Bowen added.

Since 1946, Target has given 5 percent of its income to communities its stores serve. Today, grants total more than $3 million a week nationwide. Visit Target: Here for Good for more information.
