Whitman takes home three Educational Excellence Impact Awards

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, Whitman Elementary was recognized at the second annual Educational Excellence Impact Awards. The awards are hosted by Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College School Partnership Grant Programs Advisory Council.
The school took home three awards, including the Governor's Award, which recognizes schools with outstanding teachers based on value-added performance and student growth.
Whitman was the runner-up for the Superintendent’s Award and the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College Award. The Superintendent's Award recognizes schools that show significant growth based on the state board of education's A-F school letter grades. The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College Award recognizes significant improvement in the functioning of a school as a result of the implementation of TAP™, the System for Teacher and Student Advancement.
TAP™ is a national comprehensive school reform system providing opportunities for career advancement, professional growth, instructionally focused accountability and competitive compensation for educators. TAP™ impacts more than 200,000 students and 20,000 teachers across the country.
"As the principal of Whitman, it was an honor to accept the awards on behalf of the entire staff," Andrea Erickson says. "We have worked hard developing successful interventions for our students, as well as solid first-time instruction. It was rewarding to be recognized for our continued commitment to student achievement."
Erickson credits district leadership for its help in acquiring the TAP™/Teacher Incentive Fund grant in partnership with ASU. "By committing to and continuously supporting the structure of the grant, our district leadership gave us the opportunity to provide staff and students with quality professional development, which translated to higher student achievement," she says. "We are grateful for the time and opportunity the district has given us to be part of TAP™."
