Mesa seniors named 2018 National Merit® Scholarship semifinalists

National Merit® Scholarship Program semifinalists hail from Mesa, Mountain View, Red Mountain and Westwood high schools.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced seven Mesa Public Schools seniors were named semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. Less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide are eligible.

The district semifinalists are:

Zachary O'Bryant from Mesa High
Mark Merrill from Mountain View High
Whitnee Forest, Ashlyn Laird, Courtney Tetlow and Trinity Wolff from Red Mountain High
Jessica Yan from Westwood High

According to the sponsoring organization, these academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit® Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit® Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
