Two district schools earn 2018 National Blue Ribbon awards

Franklin Junior High School and Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies received the prestigious award for overall excellence in education.

Two students studying science at Mesa Academy for Advanced StudiesFranklin Junior High School and Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies were named 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Only five schools in Arizona received the award this year. Nationwide, 349 schools were recognized for overall excellence. Representatives from each school will attend an award ceremony Nov. 7-8 in Washington, D.C.

"We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives," says U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. "Congratulations on your students' accomplishments and for your extraordinary commitment to meeting their unique needs."

Blue Ribbon awards recognize the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming school environments where students master challenging and engaging content. 

"This award highlights the conscientious efforts teachers make on a daily basis to ensure all students achieve their personal best," says Jeff Abrams, Franklin Junior High principal. "The National Blue Ribbon award is the culmination of multiple years of positive, impactful working relationships amongst all stakeholders at Franklin Junior High. The focus of an ongoing growth mindset empowers each and every student to reach their potential and beyond. It is with pride that we accept this prestigious recognition with the knowledge that it guides our efforts in attaining greater success."

Since 1982, 22 district schools have earned the National Blue Ribbon award. 

"Mesa Academy is honored to be recognized for the dedication of our students who, with the support of their parents, teachers, staff and community members, continue to exceed expectations," says Principal Nikki Wilfert. "We are grateful to represent Mesa and the state of Arizona as a National Blue Ribbon School."
