PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Bridget Braney

Sandra Day O'Connor Elementary School is proud to be part of Mesa Unified School District. O'Connor houses 24 regular education classrooms, one classroom for visually challenged individuals as well as two classes for MOMD, one ED class, assistance for children with specific learning disabilities, as well as a program for children with speech and language needs.
O'Connor Elementary is a Title One school. Our Title One budget is used to provide additional instruction in the areas of Reading and Math. Instructional assistants are hired from these funds to augment the instruction of classroom teachers. Recently, we have adopted the services of a Reading Coach. This individual assists teachers and grade levels in acquiring the necessary materials to ensure that all O'Connor Students will be fluent and proficient readers as they exit the third grade.
The teachers and students at O'Connor value the importance of learning in a disciplined and safe environment. We address and emphasize the mastery of skills in reading, math and written language. Intermediate students are strongly encouraged to extend their learning in the arts by participating in band or orchestra. Many staff members have become members of our school's performing music ensembles, as well.
At the start of the 2008-2009 school year, all classroom teachers are required to have a full ESL (English as a Second Language) Endorsement. Teachers earn this endorsement by completing coursework to help them better meet the needs of our second language learners. The strategies used with ESL students in the classroom help all children learn.
O'Connor parents are involved in school activities and supporting education for all children. Six parents serve on our OCELOT site council which meets six (6) times a year. Our PTO encourages parent involvement in school activities and supports our educational programs.
Thank you for checking out our web site. If you want a closer look, please consider volunteering in one of our classrooms, or apply for one of our paraprofessional positions.
Together, we can make an incredible difference in the lives of our children.
