Changes in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
December 2016, the Arizona Department of Education adopted revised Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The way teachers instruct and our expectations for students is quite different than when you (parents) were in elementary school.

There will be a two year implementation timeline for the newly adopted standards. 2017-2018 is a transitional implementation year, while full implementation will occur in 2018-2019. AzMERIT will be aligned to the new standards beginning with the spring 2019 exam.
AzMERIT is the new student assessment for 3rd-12th grade students in the areas of ELA and Math. The Arizona Department Education (ADE) has established a Portal for resources. Sample tests are built to function like the actual AzMERIT tests. They are intended to provide students the opportunity to use and become familiar with all the tools and functionality of the computer-based AzMERIT tests (CBT). They are not intended to provide information regarding students' readiness for AzMERIT testing.
