What is Title 1?
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) of 2001 authorizes more federal funds than ever before for education in kindergarten through high school. A large portion of NCLB funds are used for grants under Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Title 1 grants are awarded to help states and school districts:
· improve the education of disadvantaged students
· turn around low-performing schools
· improve teacher quality
· increase choices for parents
The Arizona Department of Education administers and monitors Title 1 funding. Mesa Public Schools' Title 1 Program helps students succeed academically. It is a supplemental program to assist teachers in helping each child learn MPS curriculum objectives and master Arizona Academic Standards at Title 1 schools.
