1. To register your child in a Mesa Public School you will need to provide the following:
A. The original certified birth certificate - no copies will be accepted.
B. Immunizations (official records or copies) with a doctor's signature or stamp
C. Proof of residency: Driver's License, a bill (SRP, Qwest, City Sewer, etc.), lease or rental agreement, or a bank statement. TOP

2. Typically, registration for Kindergarten is early in the third quarter (January). Check the marquee, the Panther Pawprints newsletter, or this website for updates. TOP

3. We have four classes for Kindergarten: one class (half-day) for our younger learners who must turn five years old between September 1st and December 31st and three (full-day) for students who will be five years old by August 31st. TOP

5. You may request a form from the office that can be sent home with your child, or you may come into the office and pick up a form. Return the form to your child's teacher or the office for processing. TOP

7. If you call the office (480-472-3700), the secretaries will record the necessary message and send it out with "runners" at 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. All messages received prior to these times will insure less interuptions into the classrooms. TOP

8. Our school is named after Francis M. Pomeroy, leader of the pioneer "Mesa Company" which migrated from Paris, Idaho to Mesa in 1877. Eighty-three settlers braved the one-thousand mile journey acorss rough and dangerous country to help tame this desert valley, now home to millions of Americans. There is also a street and several businesses in the Mesa area with the Pomeroy name as well. TOP

9. Historically, school district boundaries are established before city boundaries are solidified. Mesa Public Schools had serviced the rural area south of the canal long before the City of Chandler formally annexed the land. This phenomenon is not uncommon. There is at least one Gilbert School in Mesa and several Tempe Schools in Phoenix. There are five MPS schools in Chandler, all feeding into Dobson High School. Although all East Valley schools have excellent reputations, we are very proud to be a part of the Mesa Public Schools. The District's commitment to quality is well known locally and nationally. TOP

10. We are a "traditional" school with self-contained classrooms focusing on the standards set forth by the Arizona Board of Education. Phonics is taught explicitly through third grade as a cornerstone of the reading program. Our overall emphasis is on Reading, Math, and Writing. Our hands-on Science curriculum is recognized nation-wide as an excellent integrated foundation in the field. Social Studies becomes more prominent at the older grades. Kids receive weekly instruction from specialists in Library Skills, P.E., Music, and Art (4th-6th). TOP

11. Accelerated Reader (AR) is the "practice" piece of the overall gameplan to get kids to love reading and to be able to read independently on their own grade level. Researchers have noted that although kids may receive proper instruction in the skill of how to read, without sufficient time logged actually reading, their reading levels will stagnate. Would a basketball coach spend two hours talking about offense followed by a ten minute scrimmage? Not likely, but that is what happens when kids don't get the time they need to practice reading at their reading level. That's what AR does - it supplies the missing piece in a comprehensive reading program. AR is a simple concept, but the program is actually quite deep with lots of details that could not be fully explained here. 12. We offer a variety of options for kids after school. Some are fee-based programs run by outside groups who contract with us for available space. Others are home-grown clubs sponsored by Pomeroy teachers. Kids Corner is a fee-based before and after school program that provides daycare for kids 6:30 a.m.-7:30 a.m. and after school up until 6:00 p.m. Registration information can be obtained by calling 480-472-7255. 4th-6th graders can participate in intramural basketball sponsored by Mr. Rosdahl each fall. Offered again this year is our Video Club, sponsored by Ms. Pitzen. Our budding TV anchors meet twice monthly on Thursdays and help put together our morning video announcements as well as creating and editting iMovies. Once again, Mrs. Basilo and Mrs. Erickson will be spearheading the Service Club; however, this Club meets during the school day. Those interested in Student Government can be elected to be a class representative for Student Council, sponsored by Ms. Pitzen. Student Council meets twice a month on Thursdays. After school programming is dependent upon personnel with a passion to make things happen. We would love to see a myriad of activities... TOP
