I am originally from the Seattle area, where I taught in Montessori classrooms at private schools for four years. Before teaching with the Montessori method, I taught at two different homeschool enrichment programs for ten years while homeschooling my children. I have taught everything from robotics to creative writing, kindergarten through 9th grade. I am excited to be at Pomeroy and Mesa Public Schools as part of a public Montessori program!
I earned a Masters of Education degree from Arizona State University in Early Childhood Education and have an Arizona State teaching certificate for birth-3rd grade. My Montessori certification is as a Primary Teacher (2.5-6 years). I studied at the Montessori Academy at Spring Valley in Washington state, which is a MACTE-accredited teacher training program.
My educational philosophy is that students should be able to apply and transfer their knowledge in the real world, so that what they learn is relevant to them on a personal level. The "why" is just as important as the "how," and if students can figure something out on their own, they will retain that information much better than if someone just gives it to them. Especially important in a Montessori classroom is the development of independence and a student's ability to function as a contributing member of a community.
