Subject: Math
 
Title: Let's Go Camping
 
Grade Level: 5
 

Time Required:

2 class periods planning and gathering statistics
2 computer classes developing budget and graph in computer lab

 
Description: Students will use a variety of resources (catalogs, newspaper ads, the Internet) to find necessities for a three day camping trip. Students will plan a budget according to their needs. A spreadsheet will be used to organize the budget. A word processing justification for their choices will also be included.
 

Curriculum Objectives:

  • Math, Arizona Academic Standard 2: Data Analysis and Probability: Students use data collection and analysis, statistics, and probability to make valid inferences, decisions and arguments and to solve a variety of real-world problems.
  • Writing, W-E6, Write formal communications, such as personal or business letters, messages, directions and applications, in an appropriate format and for a specific audience and purpose.
 

Materials Needed:

  • Access to Internet, catalogs, newspaper ads
  • Spreadsheet and word processing software.
 
Procedure:
  1. Brainstorm a list of camping needs.
  2. Divide students into teams of 2 or 3.
  3. Students will create a list of needed items for a three-day camping trip.
  4. They will research the cost of the necessary items using various resources.
  5. A spreadsheet, organizing their needs will be created showing the item, number of each item, costs (including tax and shipping if applicable) and totals.
  6. After items are totaled, students must cut costs by 25%.
  7. Students must include a written justification for the items chosen.
  8. Print spreadsheet and justification.
 
Assessment: Teacher will evaluate according to curriculum objectives.
