Subject: Mathematics

Title: Four 4's

Grade Level: 7 - 8

Time Required: 2 class periods

Description: Students will be able to only use four 4's to create a formula that they will be placing in a spreadsheet. They can use the number 24 and 44. The answers will start at the number 1 and end at 20.

Curriculum Objectives:

  • Mathematics Standard 1: Number sense 1M-E4. Develop and apply number theory concepts (e.g., primes, factors, and multiples) to represent numbers in various ways. PO5 Simplify numerical expressions using order of operations.

Materials Needed:

  • Spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel or AppleWorks
  • Computer

Procedure:

  1. Students will be allowed to use only four 4's along with the numbers of 24 and 44 to get the answers of 1 to 20.
  2. Review the order of operations.
  3. Show students how to raise to the power of (caret) when using a formula on the spreadsheet.
  4. Show students how to square (SQR) a number using a formula on the spreadsheet.

Assessment:

Check the students' work. They should have the correct answer. One point for each correct answer with a total of 20 possible points.

Example:

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16
42 — 4 — 4 = 8
