Message
Greetings,
Rhodes Jr. High has a long standing tradition of excellence. We are continuing and building upon that tradition as we open the 2008-09 school year as a World Studies Academy. So just what is a World Studies Academy? Our curriculum continues to be driven by the Arizona State Standards and those skills that students need in order to be successful on our state’s accountability test (AIMS). However, our mission also includes preparing our students for the 21st century by giving them defined skills that will prepare them to live and work in a world that is changing rapidly before our eyes. We believe that students need independent learning skills (how to study, how to research, how to evaluate, how to create and present, etc.), as well as technology skills, and communication skills. We also want to empower our students to look at ways they can positively impact their world through service learning and other meaningful activities that allow them to apply the skills sets they are acquiring.
We are also requiring a foreign language for our 8th and 9th grade students. This is a key component that we believe will prepare our students to be on a college bound track, will provide the opportunity to get high school credit as an 8th grader, and will help them develop an appreciation for other cultures. The ability to speak a second language is also a valuable asset in many of the increasingly competitive job markets today. However, we are also committed to continuing to provide a comprehensive junior high model that provides students opportunities to participate in art, music, technology and other elective offerings. We believe that our new seven day period provides students those options.
We hope to teach our students to dream big, to respect themselves and others, and to carry on the proud traditions of this school. We expect them to become responsible citizens of the greatest republic in the world. We have had a great deal of support as we developed our World Studies Academy model. Our teachers and staff have had the backing of our district office, our Parent Teacher Association, and local community members. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and we hope to build on the momentum we are carrying into the 2008-09 school year. It really is an exciting time to be part of Rhodes Jr. High. Please take a moment to read our newly revised mission and vision statements. We hope you will take time to ask questions and become involved as your child participates in these exciting opportunities.
Sincerely,
~
Mr. Matt Devlin,
Principal
