National
Academic League (NAL)
CLUB/ORGANIZATION
INFO:
National
Academic League is an academic sport for schools - one that
uses thinking skills instead of physical skills! The purpose
of the National Academic League is to motivate students
to excel in academics in the same way that athletes excel
in sports. The NAL successfully combines the important aspects
of team sports (ex: competitiveness, strategy, team mentality
and cooperation in a group effort) with important apsects
of learning (ex: problem solving, critical thinking, and
scholarship). School districts join the NAL, and schools
play an academic season just like an athletic season.
The
games and tournaments resemble an athletic event and include
facets of athletics such as fouls, time-outs, technicals,
coaches, and referees. Each game consists of four separate
quarters and each quarter develops different skills such
as problem solving, teamwork, and quick recall. NAL questions
span the basic subject curriculum areas of math, English/language
arts, science and social studies. Each team has from 15-40
participants. The questions used in the competition are
curriculum-based and they correlate to national standards.
