Is
leadership about getting it done, or about including
everyone? Veronica Riner, a Rhodes Junior High School
eighth grader, recently explored this question of leadership
styles as she attended the National Young Leaders State
Conference on September 13 -16. According to Veronica,
highlights included the discussion of leadership styles,
a frank conversation about the troubles that arise from
stereotyping and the importance of accepting racial
differences.
Veronica,
an outstanding Rhodes eighth grader was nominated for
this conference last year by her English teacher, Marta
Connally.
Michael Lasday, Executive Director of the Congressional
Youth Leadership Council said, “The aim of NYLSC
is to inspire students to recognize their own leadership
skills, measure their skills against those of their
peers and return home with newfound confidence in their
ability to serve as future leaders.” The
four-day forum focused on eight core leadership power
tools: communication, conflict resolution, decision
making, goal setting, group dynamics, leadership techniques,
project management, and self-awareness.
