COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Students are assigned to appropriate level reading courses based on the reading comprehension score on the previous spring’s administration of the AIMS test and scores on the Language! placement test or Gates McGintie Reading test.

  • RD17 READING FOR SUCCESS – full year
    This is a year long course for students reading below grade level. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and is designed to meet the needs of students to improve reading skills needed to increase reading level.
  • RD07 POWER READING - one semester
    This is a one-semester course required for students reading near grade level. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and includes instruction in vocabulary and reading comprehension. Critical thinking skills will also be emphasized in this class.
  • RD10 ADVANCED READING - one semester
    This is a one-semester course designed for very accelerated students with good study skills. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and emphasizes critical thinking skills and independent activities.

NOTE: One semester of reading is required for all students with no exceptions. An additional semester (full year) is required for all students who need it. Testing during first semester determines second semester. Advanced reading students can also take an additional reading elective, RD24 Mysteries and More, an upper level elective which emphasizes critical reading and thinking skills.

8th Grade:

Placement will be based on the most recent test scores or Gates MacGinitie Test score if new to the school.
  • RD18 READING FOR SUCCESS- full year
    This is a full year course required for students reading below grade level. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and is designed to meet the needs of students reading below grade level. Instruction is provided to improve reading skills needed to increase reading level.
  • RD08 POWER READING - one semester
    This is a one-semester course for students reading near grade level. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and includes instruction in vocabulary and reading comprehension. Critical thinking skills will be emphasized in the class.
Note: An upper level reading class (RD24) is offered as an elective for advanced readers. This course emphasizes critical reading and thinking skills.

9th Grade:

  • RD19 READING FOR SUCCESS - one semester 1/2 credit
    This is a one-semester class required for students reading below grade level. Course content aligns with Arizona Academic Standards and is designed to meet the needs of students reading below grade level. Instruction is provided to improve reading skills needed to increase reading level.
  • RD24 MYSTERIES AND MORE- one semester 1/2 credit
    Students are placed according to their test scores. This course is designed for readers who enjoy reading mysteries, science fiction, adventure and other genre. Students will further develop reading and thinking skills through related activities, film and computer technology.


Note: Students in all classes read daily from a student selected library book. Reading comprehension skills are taught through short stories, daily logs, read alouds, group sharing, book projects, computer technology, biographies, word attack skills, etc.
