Information for Parents A to Z
Dear Parents
I would like to welcome you and your child to the Rhodes Jr. High World Studies Academy family. Junior high can be a scary time for kids. They are going through physical changes, experiencing new challenges, and navigating the social networks that can be so difficult at this time. We hope to work hand in hand with you to make this the best possible learning experience for your child. Our teaching staff and office personnel have committed to a set of common shared values that will guide us as we work with you. We have posted these common shared values on the back of our newsletter and we invite you to share these with your child and work to make them part of his/her vocabulary. Last year our students developed a school creed based on the common core values. The school creed is recited by our students weekly as a reminder of our school’s focus on core values.
This year we are implementing several key programs to support student achievement for all. One of these programs is an enrichment/intervention period of 30 minutes four days per week. We will use this period as a homeroom to take care of school business, such as announcements, etc. However, our main focus during this period is to provide support for all students to develop critical reading strategies through current events and character education. We also will use this time for targeted intervention for students who are struggling in math. By intervening early and often we hope to avoid having students falling behind in the critical areas of learning.
We are continuing our Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort program (PRIDE). We have made some significant changes to the program this year and I invite you to read the information page included in this newsletter. One of the key changes is the notebook we are asking all students to carry. Each student will be given a 3 ring binder and materials that will help them stay organized. This is just one of many study skills and strategies we will be teaching through the PRIDE program. Another change to the PRIDE program is that students will serve the Rhodes Responsibility Room after school on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Transportation will be provide for students who normally ride the bus.
As we start the year I want to encourage all parents to consider the critical role that you play in your child’s academic success. Please know that we consider you a key to student success. Stay involved by talking to your child about their school day. Be sure to ask to see their school binder and to help them understand the importance of being organized and completing their assignments. We have multiple opportunities for you to be involved in school committees like SIAC and PTA. We currently have parent openings on our PTA board. Please feel free to contact me if you would like information about how you could be a part of those critical support groups. I look forward to working with you and your child.
Sincerely,
Matt Devlin
