Course Description
The focus is to develop confidence in using English and to improve skills in all areas. The emphasis is on oral language work in class such as, conversation, discussions, vocabulary building and listening comprehension. Written work such as compositions and reading comprehension is stressed.
Unit Objectives:
To enjoy reading short stories
To analyze the literary elements in short stories
To apply strategies for reading short stories
Theme 1:Transitions:
The short stories in Theme 1 introduce students to characters facing and trying to cope with changes in their lives, such as the loss of a parent, moving from wartime into peace time, and planning for the final years of life.
Theme 2: Making Choices:
The choices made by the characters in Theme 2 help define who they are and the direction their lives will take.
Theme 3: Twists
Unexpected twists and turns of events surprise both characters and readers in Theme 3.
Theme 4: Challenges and Consequences
Characters in Theme 4 face challenges from nature, prejudice, ignorance, or hate. Other characters must deal with the consequences of situations they caused or of events beyond their control.
Students will learn long-term reading skills. From prereading skills through reading fluency. The series provides exercises in word study skills, reading strategies, high interest fiction and nonfiction stories.
