Art instruction addresses the Arizona Visual Arts Standards:

Each intermediate student participates in art class for one hour ever two weeks. Usually a project or lesson is designed to take one class period and concentrates on one aspect of art such as an element of art or principal of design.
Elements of Design: Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Color, Value
Principles of Art: Balance and Unity.
Art grades are based upon student PARTICIPATION and BEHAVIOR in each art class and are assigned a number based upon teacher observation and anecdotal notes.s
4=Outstanding a (Student demonstrates superior level of involvement and responsibility for learning. Student has met ALL requirements during each art class.)

• completes artwork on time
• demonstrates careful craftsmanship
• uses time productively
3=Satisfactory (Student demonstrates a steady, reliable level of involvement and responsibility for learning. Student has met MOST requirements during each art class.)
2=Improving (Student demonstrates varying levles of involvement and responsibility for learning. Student has met SOME requirements during each art class.)
1=Area of Concern (Student demonstartes a lack of involvement and responsibility for learning. Student SELDOM meets requirements during each art class.)
Students are expected to demonstrate active participation by listening, asking/answering questions, and discussing the topic as well as following directions as they work though the activities of the lesson. It is most important that students put forth their best effort in each art class, take pride in their work, employ neatness, and finish the projects in the time given.
Student behavior should be conducive to the individual and overall learning and safety of the class. Students are expected to enter the room quietly, take their seat and listen to instruction. They need to work cooperatively as they share materials and space.
Negative comments, and disruptive behaviors are not permitted and are subject to discipline measures. Students are given a warning for the first problem in class, then a 5 minute time out to write the classroom rules, then they are sent out of the classroom is the problem escalates beyond the second step. All steps of art room discipline are reported to the classroom teacher and should be part of student reports sent home.
Throughout the year, outstanding artwork is displayed on bulletin boards within the school.
