Biography

PortraitWelcome to First Grade in Room B4!  My name is Christine Kern. This is my 15th year of teaching and my second year here at Salk.  I have taught Kindergarten for 13 years, and I am so excited to be teaching First Grade again!

I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and am the youngest of four children. I have three older brothers, and I am a fan of anything Chicago: 2016 World Champion Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears, and deep-dish pizza! I am married, and my husband and I have two wonderful grown sons.  In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching game shows on TV, going to concerts, and baking.

I graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and a Minor in Advertising Art and Design. I received my Post-Baccalaureate Teaching Certification through Ottawa University here in Phoenix. My endorsements include SEI (Structured English Immersion, K-12) and Early Childhood.

My philosophy of education is that every child can learn and succeed. I want my students to always try to do their best. I want to encourage and motivate them by instilling a positive attitude in them by emphasizing, "I will try" instead of "I can't". Persevere through challenges and one will experience success.  One of my favorite quotes is: "Mistakes are proof that you are trying."

I am looking forward to another fabulous year in First Grade!
