English Students Reach High Goals
Congratulations are in order for the following students who excelled in an essay contest based on the novel, Anthem. Out of over 15,000 entries in a nationwide contest, David Gouldthorpe finished in 3rd place earning $200. Sarah Bearaman, Justin Hunsaker and Alexander Stout were finalists each earning $50. Congratulations!
Social Studies Teacher Receives Top Awards
Not only was Nancie Lindblom named the district's Educator of the Month and Arizona's American History Teacher of the Year, she also entered two national competitions and won! Ms. Lindblom has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship and admission to the Presidential Academy. In July, Ms. Lindblom will join 60 other teachers selected nationwide spending time in Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. for the Presidential Academy. In July of 2012, she will attend a four-week Sumer Institute to study constitution history at Georgetown University as part of the James Madison Fellowship. Congratulations Ms. Lindblom

Staff Member Spending Summer Abroad
Skyline's very own Performing Arts chair and choral director, Jeff Medlock, has been selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer program. Mr. Medlock will be studying Mozart in Vienna, Austria for 4 weeks over summer break. Out of 2000 applicants, Mr. Medlock was one of 25 chosen. Congratulations!
Skyline Orchestra Succeeds
On Saturday, March 26th, Skyline's Symphony Orchestra place in the 94th percentile in the nation at the Heritage Music Festival held in San Diego, CA. The orchestra received a Gold Rating and the Adjudicator's Award for Outstanding Performance at the festival. Christa Cook received an award for Outstanding Soloist and Alfred Keyes received an award for Outstanding Cellist. In addition, the orchestra received an invitation to perform in New York, Chicago, Florida or Los Angeles in a Gold Rated Festival featuring only orchestras scoring in the 92nd percentile or higher. Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band Ensembles all received Silver ratings and 1st place in each division. Congratulations to their outstanding performances!
Math Department Wins
Math teacher and department chair, Dee Brown has been selected by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce as their Teacher of the Year. Congratulations!
Math Makes the Grade
Four students have been recognized by the Math Department for their outstanding achievement in mathematics: 9th grade, Shantel Jesson; 10th grade, Morgan Smith; 11th grade, Markie Johnson; 12th grade, Marcus Jackson.
Skyline Baseball Conquers
Congratulations to the Skyline Baseball team for their 3-0 victory over Red Mountain on March 1st. Because of his dominating pitching performance, Trent Keefer was named the Tribune Newspaper's East Valley Player of the Week.
Skyline Band Rocks
On March 8th, Skyline's Wind Ensemble competed at the ABODA Festival and received an Excellent rating, the highest level that can be achieved in Division 1 competition. At this level, students are challenged to play the highest level of music literature.
Skyline Symphony Achieves
Members of the Skyline Symphone auditioned for the AMEA West Orchestra. Eleven students, the largest group in Skyline history, will participate. Chelsea Calvert, Christa Cook, Marina Garcia, Sophia Ottleben, Octavio Partida, Cassandra Roberts, Marlee Roberts, Manuel Vasquez, Morgan Waters, Cassy Weldon and Jessica Zappanti.
Student and Staff Writers Excel in Voices
Recently, several of our Skyline students participated and excelled in the Voices district writing contest. Congratulations to the following:
David Gouldthorpe, 9th grade poetry honorable mention for "River of Eternity". Rachel Swan, 12th grade poetry 1st place for "Rhythm". Madison Springer, 1st place (tie) 10th grade short story for "Cobra Starship". Elizabeth Hansen, 1st place (tie) 10th grade short story for "Left Behind". Tiffany Ann Shepstead, 10th grade short story honorable mention for "Swaying".
Mrs. Jenny Medlock, English department chair, won three 1st place awards in the staff categories: personal narrative for "Mom Was Right After All", essay for "Failure is an Option", and short story for "Alone".
Skyline was awarded a total of 8 awards this year which included sweeping the 10th grade short story division. Outstanding job!
Student Council Shines
Congratulations to the Skyline Student Council on a successful blue jeans drive! Over 350 pairs of blue jeans were collected and donated to the Teens for Jeans program in partnership with Aeropostale. This program benefits local homeless shelters.
Recently, the Skyline Student Council attended the State Convention in Show Low. They won the Oustanding Council of Distinction Award for their involvement and community service. They were also awarded a special Gold Community Service Award for conducting Breakfast with Santa, a program that serves needy families in the Skyline community during Christmas time.
Choir Receives Top Honors
Supernaturals, Skyline's top choir, participated in the Northern Arizona University Jazz / Madrigal Festival this weekend (2/11 & 2/12) and recieved a superior rating. Superior is the highest rating possible at this festival.
The festival took place in Flagstaff over the course of two days. Hundreds of choirs perform at multiple performing venues adjudicated by some of the top conductors in the country.
Over the past seven years, Skyline has sent nine choirs to perform at has recieved nine superior ratings. If you have any of these students in your classes, please congratulate them on their outstanding performance.

Cross Country
Senior, Fermin Villagran, was recognized in October's edition of ESPN's Rise Magazine. Fermin was given recognition for his outstanding accomplishments in the 5000m this year. Fermin finished 2nd on October 30, 2010 with a time of 16:34.72 and was 9th in the Championship 5000m at Toka Sticks on November 22, 2010.
DECA Excels
Recently, Skyline's DECA students competed and excelled at the Eastern Region Competition that was held at Mesa Community College. Over 500 students from across the East Valley competed in this year's event.
Apparel & Accesories: Hayden Hilliard won 1st place overall, scored in the top 3 on the exam and was a top medalist in role play. Brandon Marks placed 3rd overall and was a top medalist in role play.
Restaraunt Food Services: Melissa Colins placed 1st overall, was a top medalist on the exam and in role play. Patience Pearson placed 3rd overrall and was a top medalist in role play.
Professional Selling Event: Paul Weller won 1st overrall and placed 1st on the exam. Courtney Lord was a top medalist in role play and placed in the top 6 overrall.
Marketing Management: Brody Swift placed 2nd overrall, 1st on the exam and was a top medalist in role play.
Hotel Lodging Management: Kevin Ngo placed 2nd overrall, 1st on the exam and was a top medalist in role play. Austin Nobles and Kyle Sekenski were top medalists on the exam.
Advertising Campaign (written and presentation): Kassandra Pitman placed 2nd overrall and was a top medalist on the exam.
Automotive Marketing: Grace Boardman place 3rd overrall and was in the top 3 in the exam.
Performing Arts Masters Music at Regionals
Over 18 schools recently competed in the West Region Music Ensemble competition. Skyline will be represented well this year in the Choir, Band and Orchestra arenas. The following students will represent Skyline in the ensemble this year:

Skyline Academic Decathlon
On February 4th, Skyline's Academic Decathlon team participated in the Region IV competition. Out of more than 20 participating schools, our Skyline team finished 6th and earned special recognition for their 3rd place finish in the SuperQuiz portion of the competition. Congratulations!!
