Biography

Welcome! My name is Katherine Thrailkill and I am currently teaching American History and Government. I'm excited to be entering my third year here at Skyline and as a member of an exceptional Social Studies department. I graduated from Mountain View High School and am a proud product of Mesa Public Schools. For my undergraduate studies I attended Arizona State University where I double majored earning a B.A in Philosophy and Political Science with a Certificate in Civic Education. After undergrad I moved to Bergamo, Italy where I worked as an English language tutor and Au Pair with a wonderful Italian family. I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe during my time living abroad. When living stateside I am an avid traveler and explorer of our National Parks. I spent the summer of 2012 backpacking through Zion, Yellowstone, Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park, North Cascades, Olympic and the Redwoods. When not teaching I am most likely reading, traveling, hiking or perusing a local art installation or museum.

In December of 2017 I earned my M.Ed in Secondary Education. I am certified to teach American Government, History and English. Overall, my educational philosophy relies heavily on the belief that all students are capable of learning and deserve to be academically challenged. I encourage students to ask questions, delve deeper into contentious topics and arrive at their own conclusions. I often find myself telling students, "I'm teaching you how to think, not what to think" when analyzing history and it's influence in shaping our world today.

"The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future"
