Introduction to Course
During the first week of the class, students will become familiar with working in the computer lab environment. We discuss rules and procedures, course expectations, and learn about the hardware and software we will be using.

Keyboarding
Students will learn how to touch type during the first quarter of the semester. Proper keyboarding technique and posture are reinforced. Students begin by learning the home row of keys and are then introduced to two keys a day until they are familiar with the whole keyboard. Handwriting Recogntion Software
Students will use a Wacom handwriting tablet instead of a mouse as they learn how to use the handwriting features of Microsoft Office XP. This is where students write and the computer will type what they write or insert their handwritten copy. This really forces students to work on their penmanship skills and helps them become familiar with this newest inputting device.

Voice Recognition Software
Students will be exposed to cutting edge technology as they learn to use Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.0 Preferred voice recognition software. That’s right, students will be able to talk to their computers and the computer will do the typing! This helps improve students’ reading, writing and speaking skills as it increases their overall productivity.

Microsoft Office XP--Word, Excel and PowerPoint
The Microsoft Office Suite is the most commonly recognized program in the world. Students will learn the basics of Word, Excel and Powerpoint as they are used for both personal and professional uses. Class assignments will focus on students' using their various inputting skills to create, edit, and format a variety of documents including MLA style reports, personal business letters, memos/e-mails, newsletters, spreadsheets and presentations.
