I am honored to be the principal of Sousa Elementary School.
Sousa is an amazing learning community, Mrs. Lamannaand I feel fortunate to have the privilege to serve our community.  At Sousa, we reach for the stars everyday by having high expectations for our learning community. I fully support  Sousa’s vision of “Empowering Students for Lifelong Learning.” We are preparing students in our classroom for a future that is hard to comprehend with all the advancements in technology.  We have a deep commitment to the whole child through innovative, student centered learning at Sousa. We use many strategies in the classroom to teach content skills, social-emotional skills, and twenty-first century life skills.  Our students learn the importance of taking and using notes, working in collaborative groups, and communicating effectively and kindly.

Let me take a moment to introduce myself.  I was born and raised in Clear Lake, IA which is a small town located between Des Moines and Minneapolis.  My home town is recognized around the world for having an annual Winter Party at the Surf Ballroom, the last place Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper performed before a fatal plane crash.  My husband and I lived in Arizona in the 90s, and returned in 2013 after living in the suburbs of Chicago for 10 years. I cheer for Arizona sports teams unless they are playing the Cubs or the Bears. I have been married for over 20 years to my husband Eric, and have a son, Anthony, who is now a teenager.  I graduated from Arizona State University after a dual major of special education and elementary education. I continued my education at Loyola University Chicago where I earned my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership.

I have worked in the field of education since 1999.  As a teacher, I taught students with emotional disabilities in grades 4-8.  I have been an educational administrator since 2006 fulfilling different leadership roles. I have been a lead teacher, early childhood coordinator, Jr. High assistant principal, Director of Educational Services, and a special education director prior to becoming the Principal of Sousa Elementary School.

I spend much of my day visiting classrooms and helping to improve the teaching and learning that goes on at Sousa every day.  Please contact the office staff if you would like to schedule a time to discuss any issues with me. I look forward to being one member of your child’s team at Sousa.
