Mesa Schools, located in Mesa, Arizona, offers its students the unique opportunity to experience the thrill of flight in space by participating in a Space Simulation. Using wireless radios, video, and networked laptops students are able to experience the workings of an actual shuttle mission first hand. The students learn the importance of good communication, teamwork, and problem solving as they constantly battle an ever depleting oxygen tank.

Kerr Elementary School, 2003
A look at an old mission with the analog technology. The wooden Shuttle has be replaced with the new vehicle and wireless technology. The Kerr missions have been running since 1991 when the concept was orginated at Roosevelt Elementary School and then moved to Kerr in 1993.

Washington Elementary School, 2004
The last year of the analog style mission and the last use of the old wooden Shuttle. The year 2004 saw the tenth anniversary of the Washington shuttle missions.

Kerr Elementary introduces the NEW SHUTTLE, 2005

2004 saw the introduction of new technology that has allowed the Shuttle misson concept to expand. In the past, the hard wiring of a shuttle mission proved to difficult for most schools and teachers. Typically it took 10 - 12 hours to wire all the video and computer networks together. Now, it can be done in about an hour. The new shuttle is constructed of steel tubing with a corrigated plastic skin. It measures 22' long and 8' wide. It is divided into three sections and can accomodate six crew members comfortably.

Sirrine Elementary School, 2005
The last of the wooden shuttles. In all, four shuttles wer e build and used in the Mesa Schools since 1991.

Barbara Bush Elementary Mission, 2005

This mission marks the beginning of the new mission curriculum format. All curriculum is organized and distributed to each student via notebooks. The hands-on activities are distributed and kept organized in plastic tubs. This insures that all the pieces are present when needed. The science department sends the curriculum kits to the schools about three weeks prior to a mission. The kits are picked up after the mission.

The Future of the Project
The 2008 -2009 school year will see the expansion to more than 40 elementary schools. The mission will be available to all sixth graders. Two shuttles will rotate into all schools and give any interested teachers a chance to participate. At present, we only have a few slots open for scheduling a mission next year.
