About Mr. Berzins
I am very excited to be a part of the Project M.E.S.A. program. I attend this program when I was a student in Mesa.
I grew up in Mesa attending Alma Elementary School, Rhodes Junior High School and then graduated from Dobson High School. I was then fortunate enough to attend the University of Arizona and received a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Chinese.
After college I joined the Peace Corps and was sent to China where I taught English at a rural university in Northwestern China. After two years there I went to Vietnam to volunteer with orphaned children who have severe birth defects due to a chemical known as Agent Orange. While there I also taught grade 6-9 science and social studies at an international school. I then returned to Mesa and taught science at Fremont Junior High for three years. I was also the Technology Integration Specialist and love to use technology in the classroom. I then went to live in the United Arab Emirates in the city of Abu Dhabi where I taught grade 3 at an international school for three years. There were students from 76 countries at the school, it was great to learn about other cultures. After returing I taught for 6 years at Kino and then another year at Fremont before finding my forever home with Project M.E.S.A. and the incedible team at the SSRC.
When not teaching I love to travel. I had not been out of the country until I was 22 years old but since then I have been to almost 40 countries. Two important things that traveling has taught me is that people all over the world are more or less the same and that learning opportunites are everywhere.
