A Message from the Principal
Dear Stapley Sabercat Families: July 2015
Welcome back to all of our amazing Stapley students and families for another great year. This year marks the twelfth year that I have served the Stapley community as principal. During that time I have been proud of the consistently high performance that our students have demonstrated in academic achievement, sports competitions and performing arts. Our program consistency can be traced back to a highly competent staff who strive to grow their teaching techniques each year and who care deeply about our Stapley students. Equally important is you, our parent community, who send your children to school well prepared to learn the lessons we teach. Program consistency, even in times of change, is a hallmark here. Naturally, there will be changes this year as our school program evolves and stays current with new practices. Our goal will be to consistently maintain our effectiveness while implementing the changes listed below.
Changes for the 2015-16 school year start with our new student schedule format. We have increased the time allotted each day for English Language Arts and Mathematics. These two subjects are blocked together each day and amount to the equivalent of three periods a day, or time-and-a-half, for each subject. This extended time will provide greater opportunity to teach each daily lesson more rigorously and in depth. The other four periods of the day remain single periods of instruction. The variety of class offerings and elective choices for students remains high. The difficulty in integrating the time-and-a-half block with the single period classes will mean that changing schedules once they are established may not be possible.
There is a trickle-down effect that comes from the time-and-a-half block that touches all parts of our schedule. PE classes will be mixed 7th and 8th grade, and daily advisory time for Stapley Survivor moves to a weekly time each Wednesday. Other changes that we feel will enhance the new schedule may be incorporated during the school year.
Our priority is to make sure that every student’s needs are addressed, and that every family need is considered. I would like to invite you to share any questions or concerns you have with us. A great place to start a conversation, email, or call back is our counseling department. You can reach Mr. Benham (for last names beginning A-M) or Ms. Rudow (for last names beginning N-Z) at 472-2790. Our team leaders, Ms. Williams and Mr. Shindledecker, also join me to assist families in any way we can.
There are a couple of important dates to consider prior to school starting: Monday, August 10, from 4:00-6:00PM we will be holding our back to school event called ‘Meet Your Locker’ night. You can walk your student’s schedule, purchase PE clothes, add money to ‘My School Bucks’ for meals and more, purchase Bookstore supplies, purchase school shirts from our Boosters, and more. This is not a meet the teacher event, but rather a time for your child to become familiar with the campus and their scheduled class location, as well as for you to purchase needed items. Our ‘Meet the Teacher’ and Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 20 beginning at 6:00 PM (5:45 PM for A-hour classes). You will travel through your student’s schedule to meet each teacher and learn about the curriculum taught during the year.
Our class offerings this summer let us get to know nearly 350 new students who will be joining us this year. Based on our time together this summer, we look forward to a fantastic school year with our terrific students. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Counselors, registrar’s office or administration if you have any questions or concerns about the school start up. We will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.
