Dear Parents of Mrs. Smithson’s Students,
Thumbs up to a great start to the year. Students have been working hard inside and outside of class. I am still waiting on a few students to turn in their Time Capsules, so please ask your son/daughter if they have done this. Any information regarding instructions can be found on our CANVAS page. Also, please check the calendar on the canvas page too. I try to keep it updated.
We are busy establishing a routine in English Language Arts. One thing that we have implemented recently is our classroom teams. I use teams to create classroom culture and to give student incentive. Learning to work with others is a valuable tool for a 7th grader to develop. Of course, students are graded individually but teams have shown to provide extra student help and support. Teams are rotated each quarter, as is their seating location. I make sure that students are not “stuck at the back” all semester. We have incentive days 3-4 Fridays a quarter. Any donations you can make for this day, would be wonderful. Things like granola bars, chips, individually wrapped candy, fun pencils, erasers, etc. Surprisingly, even 7th graders respond well to simple items to choose from.
Please take a look at my school webpage, as I have added a few more things under extra credit that might help you understand our routine. We are always in need of classroom supplies and I listed them on my webpage. I have offered extra credit for bringing in classroom supplies. This shows responsibility on the student’s part.
Before the end of the quarter we have the following things to accomplish: Vocabulary lists #3-5 (10 words each), short story, “Rikki Tikki Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Stargirl novel by Jerry Spinelli, DOL’s and sentence diagramming, sentence and paragraph structures, STARS district reading/writing test (first week of October).
Every day is packed with instruction. Students that are attentive, on-task, and trying their best will be successful. Thank you for a great group of kids that work really hard. I have truly enjoyed getting to know your son/daughter and their unique personalities. I look forward to a fabulous school year.

Please keep the top portion at home and return the bottom portion to Mrs. Smithson.
Yes Mrs. S! I gave my letter to my parent/guardian, showed them our CANVAS page, and your school webpage. I also logged into my student portal and showed them my current grades.
