8th Grade Social Studies

Class Rules & Expectations

Teacher: Foster Burton

Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies.  I am looking forward to an exciting year of Social Studies.

Classroom Expectations

1.  Be prepared to work and learn when you enter the

     classroom.
2.  Raise your hand to speak or leave your seat.
3.  Show respect for your fellow students, your teacher, and

     your school.
4.  Adhere to all rules and expectations as described in the

     student handbook.
5.  Please do not bring food, drinks or gum into the classroom.

Failure to follow these expectations will result in an appropriate disciplinary action. These consequences range from verbal warning, parent/guardian contact, detentions and finally administrative referral.

Academic Expectations

My academic expectations for this school year are that your child will learn and master the skills and meet the standards created by the Mesa Public Schools and the Arizona Department of Education.

Grading

Students will be graded on homework, projects, quizzes, and tests.

Semester grades will be determined by an average of the grade for both quarters.

Students should check their grades frequently and discus any questions with me. I will not be sending home grades on a regular basis. If you do not have internet access, please let me know.

Homework

Any work not completed in class is considered homework.  In addition, students may be assigned homework daily.  No homework will be assigned before weekends and holidays.

When students are absent it is their responsibility to find out what notes or assignments they missed and copy the information on their assignment calendar.   The student has as many days as he/she was absent to make up the missing work. Students that ditch classes with unexcused absences will not be given credit for absent work.

An assignment calendar in your student’s notebook is required.

Attendance

Attendance is an important part of a student’s education.  The skills that are taught today built upon those that were previously learned.  However, I realize that occasionally a student may become ill and miss a day.  If that occurs:

  • The student is responsible for getting all missed assignments, notes, and any other work when absent from class.
  • The student will have the same number of days to make up missing work as was missed (In other words one day for each day you’re absent.)
  • All work that was due the first day of a student’s absence is due upon his/her return to class.

Supplies

All students are requested to have a binder, loose leaf paper or spiral notebook, pencils, pen (preferably red for correcting papers).  Colored pencils may be needed to use on projects at times throughout the semester.  Students are responsible for coming to class prepared.  They will need to have the materials needed in order to be prepared for class.  Each student will need a notebook or section within his/her binder for social studies.  Since we will be adding many papers each quarter, I encourage students to use a binder with rings which open and close rather than a pocket or spiral style.  An assignment calendar and all homework, tests and quizzes will be kept in this notebook for an entire quarter.  Notebooks will be graded at least once each quarter as a test grade.  Students will be expected to bring this notebook to class each day.

Paper and pencils, and pens will be needed daily.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at 480-472-2701.  I will inform students of my email address when I receive it from the district office.
