Concert Report / Analysis Guidelines  - MAAS

Students are required to write one formal concert report or complete a Reflective Personal Analysis each quarter, and will receive instructions in class as to which will be required.  Concert Reports will be done outside class, and the Reflective Personal Analysis will be done in class.  These activities help students develop critical listening skills, and also support the writing process at the Academy.  The following information outlines the Concert Report process.  Students may attend any of the following types of live performances:

  • School concerts or assemblies - any school; vocal or instrumental
  • Local ensembles - Mesa, Tempe, Phoenix Symphonies, ASU, MCC, etc.
  • Church music functions
  • Musicals
  • Recitals

There may be other options, so if you are planning on attending a performance that isn't listed, please ask - it may be an acceptable performance.

The following information needs to be included in the report:

  • Your name and the date
  • Name of group(s), date, time, and location of performance
  • Using standard paragraph format, write about each piece performed and state whether or not you enjoyed it, and why.  Be certain to give reasons for your preference - don't just say that you liked it or didn't and stop there.  Consider posture, intonation, ensemble (rhythm), dynamics, bowing, and tone.  Also consider student behavior on/off stage, and appropriate concert dress.
  • Grammar, punctuation, and spelling must be accurate.
  • Use your 'voice' when writing - show your personality and make it interesting.

Reports must be in the following format:

  • One (1) full page, minimum
  • Do not title your report
  • Name and date in upper right hand corner (single spaced)
  • 1" margins all around
  • Typed or neatly hand-written (single spaced)
  • Font size = 12; Calibri, Times or Arial (-10 points for incorrect font/size)
  • Blue or Black ink only (-25 points for pencil)

Concert Reports are due by the end of class on the dates listed below.  You may always turn a paper in early.  10 points will be deducted per day for late papers.

  • 1st Quarter -  Thursday, October 4, 2018
  • 2nd Quarter - No Concert Report this quarter; we will do a Personal Reflection/Analysis during class, 12/19/18.
  • 3rd Quarter -  Thursday, March 7, 2019
  • 4th Quarter -  No Concert Report this quarter; we will do a Personal Reflection/Analysis during class, 5/17/19.
