Biography

Welcome to my web pages.  This is my eleventh year here at Stapley and I am so happy to be teaching 8th grade science here. I have also taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grades at Lowell Elementary and 7th grade here at Stapley.  Prior to joining Mesa Public Schools I taught Head Start for Maricopa County at Jefferson Elementary.  I received my undergraduate degree  in Elementary  Education through Ottawa University.  My masters is in Multicultural Education through Northern Arizona University.  My middle school science endorsement is through Arizona State University.    I have twins, a son and daughter, who just turned 28.  My spare time is spent enjoying the great Arizona outdoors.  I love to cycle, hike and kayak.  I also enjoy traveling and have visited Costa Rica, Bolivia and Peru along with traveling the United States and Canada.   I hiked to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and also went on safari in Serengeti, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater.  What an experience!  During Spring Break 2014 I hiked Hadrian's Wall across England. I am currently working on section hiking the Arizona Trail, which I hope to finish before Christmas. The past 7 summers I spent in Wyoming at South Pass City, which is a historical site.  I worked for the curator and was able to do lots of fun activities related to mining.    As of December, 2016 I FINISHED the Arizona National Scenic Trail - all 800+ miles of it plus both bypasses!  Now I'm helping others to do the same!

Please feel free to contact me and/or visit with me throughout the school year.  I am best contacted via my email  smfortner@mpsaz.org

Science is fun!
