Absence Policy

phone When you are absent, your parents must call the attendance office at (480) 472-3301 before 4 p.m. that day. There is an answering machine available from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. for those unable to call during office hours.

If a parent is unable to call, you need to bring a note from your parent to the attendance office when you return to school the next day. The school reserves the right to assign an appropriate absence code for an absence excuse from the parent/guardian deemed unsatisfactory/unacceptable. Examples include going shopping, babysitting, missed bus, birthday, etc.

If an absence call or a note from a parent is not received within 48 hours after you return to school, disciplinary action will be taken. An unexcused absence will be considered a truancy after two days. Teachers do not have to accept, for credit, work that is made up after a student is truant.

If you come to school late, you must check in with the attendance clerk. If a parent has called or you have a note from your parent excusing you, you will be issued a pass to class. If you are unexcused, an appropriate consequence will be issued.

If you are ill for three or more days, your parents may contact the counseling office by 9:30 a.m. to request work from your teachers. If you are planning to be absent for reasons other than illness or emergency, your parents should make prior arrangements through the Attendance office by phone or note. It is the student's responsibility to contact each teacher to make up the work to be missed, whether absent or illness or family activities. Please allow 24 hours for teachers to respond to homework requests.

All junior highs in Mesa Public schools have closed campuses. That means you must stay at school all day, unless you check out through the office. You will be released from school before the end of the school day only if a parent/guardian comes to the office, and signs the attendance log to check you out. Parent or guardian must contact school by phone or in writting to give permission for someone other than the parent or guardian to pick a student up during school hours.

Regular school attendance is one way to achieve success as a student at Hendrix. You should be on time and present at school unless you are ill or there is an emergency. You may not participate in after-school activities or dances unless you have been in school for at least half the school day.

There will be a nonactivity week at the end of each quarter of the school year. During this time, students are expected to remain in class.

It is important for you to know that all year-end social activities, awards and honor assemblies will be completed before the last full week of school. There will be no partaies or distractions from studies during the last week of the semester.
