 Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at Summit Academy. I hope learning science is a very rewarding experience for your child.  Learning science is something students do, not something that is done to them.  In class, students will be actively involved while working as individuals and in teams to make observations, acquire knowledge, generate explanations, test ideas, and communicate results. My goal for your student is to develop a love for questioning things and see how science plays a role in his/her everyday life. Please encourage your student to talk with me if he/she has any concerns. I am looking forward to working with you to ensure student success.  I hope to see you at our curriculum night. I.   Course Description

 This course will encourage students to inquire about the world around them through investigation, understanding, and explanation of Earth Science and how they are an integral part of the global environment. The concepts of science addressed in this course require the development of skills and processes necessary to investigate and evaluate scientific evidence. Inquiry will be used to relate local and global issues to science, leading to the development of positive attitudes and beliefs guided by scientific reasoning. Through an integrated approach to learning concepts and skills, students will engage in forming opinions, making decisions and developing ethical reasoning skills. Fundamental science skills will be taught in tandem with the course content.  Throughout the entire year, students will be required to keep an interactive science notebook, which will include all work done in class.  Safety is of the utmost importance. It is imperative that each student follow safety procedures at all times. Each student must return a Flinn Safety contract prior to participating in any labs. All students in the IB Honors program will be required to complete an original project for the Science Fair, which we will be starting in late September.

 II.   IB Aims and Objectives

 Throughout the course, the IB student will be encouraged to reflect on his or her progress along the Learner Profile continuum of becoming motivated, principled learners through instruction and activities that challenges the expansion of his or her global outlook through research, problem-solving, and communication.

 III.  Topics

Topics for this course include Scientific Inquiry, Astronomy, Geology, and Ecology.

IV. Global Contexts

The six Global Contexts will be integrated within each unit of study to reinforce the connections between the scientific content as it relates to other disciplines.  In addition, each unit of study will incorporate the Approaches to Learning (ATL) with one of the six Global Contexts: Identities and Relationships, Orientation in Space and Time, Personal and Cultural Expression, Scientific and Technical Innovation, Globalization and Sustainability, and Fairness and Development.

 V.  Internationalism

Internationalism would include ways in which scientists from around the world have contributed to major scientific theories and laws. We will also study global issues throughout this course, such as natural disasters, landforms, and human impact on the environment.

 VI. Homework/Reassessment Policy

 

 Here at Summit Academy, we strive for excellence. Daily homework and upcoming quizzes and tests are displayed on the whiteboard in the classroom. Students are responsible for copying this information into their planners. In addition, project due dates, tests, and quizzes will also be displayed on the online class calendar. All homework is due the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise specified. If a student is absent, the homework is due upon their return. Work not turned in will not be given credit. This includes tests and quizzes.

 Reassessment of tests, quizzes, and projects is possible if students wish to improve their grade. In order to reassess, students MUST:

  1. Complete all missing work, including assignments that were not for grading, (such as practice work and notes), projects, and any previous assessments.

    AND

  1. Attend at least one tutoring session with Ms. Schreiber since the date of the original assessment.

Reassessments must be done within one week of the original assessment date. After one week, the reassessment period closes and the initial grade earned will stand.

 VII. Grading

I expect that students will do their best on all work. Unfortunately, if I cannot read an assignment because it is too sloppy, I cannot assess its content. No credit will be given for sloppy work. Student will access the student portal regularly to see individual grade reports. Letter grades are based on the district-approved grading scale:

 

90-100% =A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

60-69% = D

0-59% = F

VIII.  Academic Honesty

 Any form of cheating will not be tolerated in this class. This includes but is not limited to, copying homework, class work, or tests, or copying and pasting from the internet (plagiarism). There will be many times in which you will participate in group work in class. This does not mean that you directly copy from team members’ assignments. Students need to write, phrase, and organize their thoughts individually. If any student is caught cheating, both will receive a “0” on the assignment/test and communication home. If it occurs a second time – the student will receive a “0”, communication home and referral.

 

 IX.  Extra Help

I offer tutoring most Wednesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:50-4:30 pm, but to ensure my availability, students are encouraged to discuss meeting times with me. I am also available at additional times upon request.

 X.   Bathroom Policy

 

Students are expected to use the bathroom during passing periods and during lunch. Students who need to use the bathroom during class will be limited to three bathroom passes per semester in my classroom. After all three bathroom passes have been used, detentions will be assigned. Not only does using the bathroom during class result in lost class time, but this is for your student’s safety. Students are not supervised when they use the bathroom during class.
