Hello and welcome! My name is Lauren Smith. I am absolutely thrilled to be the Resource Center Specialist for the Summit Academy 7-8 Library. As the Resource Specialist, I am responsible for both the library and technical support of laptop devices. Additionally, I assist in the K-6 Library throughout the week.
Prior to this role, I was a member of the Special Education team, and a remote learning instructor. While I am able to wear a variety of hats on both the 7-8 and elementary campuses, my priority remains the same: to support and empower growth in each student where they are, as they are, unconditionally.
I am a self-defined lifelong learner; passionately curious about the entirety of the complex world around us. My professional academic background is in Special Education, Social and Emotional Learning, Women's/Gender Studies, and Legal Studies.
"The beautiful thing about learning, is that no one can take it away from you." -B.B. King
I am passionate about social justice, culturally responsive-sustaining education, and encouraging active civic engagement. Diversity is a fact, Inclusion is an action. Furthermore, I profoundly believe in the critical importance of embracing neurodiversity to be able to effectively meet and understand individuals where and as they are; there is no one size fits all approach to successful learning.
"No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship." -Dr. James Comer
Originally, I am from Northeast Ohio. After living along the east coast, I moved to the Phoenix valley. When I am not educating or furthering my education, my interests include: spending time with my family, animal/wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, social activism, sustainable gardening, wildlife conservation, photography, and painting.
