Elementary English Language Arts

Reading instruction in Mesa Public Schools is defined by the Arizona’s English Language Arts Standards. Students develop competency of the standard by mastering the five components of reading which include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, as identified by the National Reading Panel. Mastery of these five components enable children to read and comprehend all genres of text in real world situations.
